In the Laudato Si encyclical, “The Issue of Water” is given prominent and serious treatment right from the start. Global extremes of water are becoming far more common in recent decades - excess of water through more intense rainfall and storms (Katrina, Sandy, Maria…not to mention the Top Ten Storms of All Time (typhoons) experienced in Asia), and alternatively the lack of water through excessive droughts. California’s and the American West’s present drought is the worst in 1,200 years with its rivers and lakes becoming bone dry due to decreased precipitation. “Greater scarcity of water will lead to an increase in the cost of food and the various products which depend on its use. Some studies warn that an acute water shortage may occur within a few decades unless urgent action is taken. The environmental repercussions could affect billions of people” [LS 31].
